Countdown to Nov. 5 municipal elections

Election Day, on Sunday Nov. 5 is coming up in all 1,100 Quebec cities and municipalities in order to elect 8000 representatives whose duty is to defend your interests.

Here are key dates leading up to polling day.

Sept. 22 – Oct.6: Reception of candidates nomination papers.

Week of Sept. 29: Mailing of notices of registration on electoral list. If you do not receive the notice or if corrections have to be made to it, you must present yourself before the Board of Revisors to enter a correction or a deletion to the electoral list. The Returning Officer will announce the dates and hours of the Board’s sitting.

Oct. 6: Proclamation of election of candidates elected without opposition.

Oct. 14 – 24: Revision of electoral list.

Oct. 28 – 30: Mobile polling day. (Date determined by Returning officer).

Oct. 29: Advance polling day from 12 noon to 8 p.m.

Nov. 3: Last day to return postal ballot to municipality if applicable.

Nov. 5: Polling day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Eligible voters 

In order to qualify to vote: you must be at least 18 years old on Nov. 5, 2017. As of Sept. 1, 2017, you must be a Canadian citizen, not under curatorship, not guilty of election fraud. You must also fulfill one of the following conditions: be domiciled in the municipality you want to vote in and, be domiciled in Quebec for at least 6 months OR have, for at least 12 months, owned property or occupied a business establishment on the territory of the town where you want to vote.

Non-resident voters who own property or occupy a business must specifically ask the municipality to be added to the electors’ list.

Eligible candidates 

To be a candidate you must be on the voters’ list and have resided, continuously or not, in the territory of the municipality for at least the last twelve (12) months on 1 September 2017. You must also file the appropriate nomination papers with the Returning Officer between Sept. 22 and Oct. 6.
