Tapping in the Townships

Denise Beamish, special collaboration

We often hear about, or have as our neighbours, one or more of the many artists and musicians who make the Townships their home. Rarer, is the knowledge of the professional dancers living in our midst.

Have you ever watched any of the ‘greats’ dance? Like Ginger Rogers & Fred Astaire in Too Hot to Handle, or Gregory & Maurice Hines in The Cotton Club, and thought to yourself “now that looks like fun, I’d love to learn to ‘bust-a- move’ like that!”

Well, you can. A number of us from TBL, Sutton, Dunham, and Bromont enjoyed the absolute privilege and delight this winter of learn- ing from a very talented and seasoned tap dance duo who call the Townships home!

Andrea Conway Doba, a Pan- American Games Bronze Medal gymnast who toured with Cirque du Soleil in Asia, Europe and North America for nearly a decade, per- formed with Peter Gabriel at the Grammy Awards, with the late Michael Jackson, and was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Next, when invited to join the renowned cabaret Teatro ZinZanni in San Francisco Andrea met her husband and creative partner, Wayne Doba.

Hailed by Donald O’Connor as a “throwback to the old Vaudeville days,” actor, dancer and comedian, Wayne Doba, shared the stage with dance legends the Nicholas Brothers and Honi Coles. An original cast member of Teatro ZinZanni founded in 1998, Wayne’s stage and screen credits reflect the diversity of his talent and experience.

Andrea and Wayne are the comedy tap dance duo Dik & Mitzi. International adventures together include performances at the world famous Wintergarten, Berlin, in Munich and Stuttgart, Germany, and the Palazzo, Spiegeltent Cabarets, in Vienna, Austria.

Closer to home on North American tours of their Dik & Mitzi Anniversary Show are performances at Theatre Lac Brome, The Piggery, and Hudson Village Theatre. When not touring, the pair perform at Teatro ZinZanni in both Seattle and San Francisco where they’ve been featured in over eighteen different productions from 1998-2017.

A talented pair, with much to share! The next session of their classes begins in April. Please contact Andrea at 450-538-1816 or mitzidik@sympatico.ca to join the fun.
