TBL Town Hall

The Town Hall building at the corner of St. Paul Road and Lakeside was originally the Post Office, built in 1908 by the Dominion of Canada. The Deed of Sale was signed by the Minister of Public Works, Wm. Pugsley, and well-known notary Ernest Fleury, who represented the Corp. County of Brome. They owned the property along with the Court House property. The sale price was $300.

At a meeting of the Brome County Historical Society in 1909, Judge Lynch said: “The new post office, which was built during the year, may detract from the beauty of our property, but is a great addition to the attractiveness of our village.” One wonders what he would think of the current renovations.

The Post Office operated there from 1908 to 1973, and many people worked there such as Antoinette Sanborn and Steve Morrison, to name just two.

No reference has been found for the exact date when the town moved in, but over time the building housed the Police Station as well as the municipal offices. It is interesting to note that of the mayors between 1888 and 1971, Ernest Fleury served several terms totalling 25 and a half years.

On Monday, September 16, town employees expect to move back to the renovated Town Hall building.
