Great Gray Owls

Darren Murphy

Great Gray owls can be found in conifer forests, open meadows and bogs.

All three locations provide excellent hunting environments. Its large size is actually deceiving as it has very thick plumage making it appear larger.

An adult weighs around 2.5lbs. Its diet consists of tiny rodents, birds and even amphibians on occasion. It hunts both day & night, mostly active in the early dawn or sunset hours.

They hunt by sound and are able to detect a potential prey’s movements up to a quarter mile away. For nesting they normally prefer to use an abandoned nest of other large birds such as osprey or hawks.
