Has Knowlton become a town exclusively for rich, older NIMBYs?
Your October editorial begins with this ageist question. It was clearly a rhetorical question, as your following comments confirmed that your answer was ‘yes’.
In my work, I have had much exposure to the insidious impacts of ageism. Separating out older people as problematic is divisive and potentially hurtful.
As to your support for densification, it is important to note that only 6% percent of the over 1000 citizens who responded to the Raymond, Chabot, Grant and Thornton survey commissioned by TBL agreed that to ‘densify the territory was an environmental and territorial development priority’.
Lac Brome citizens have a unique opportunity to live in harmony with nature. That should never be construed as a resistance to change, but as a necessary condition for our well-being now and for generations to come.
Nigel Martin Resident of Lac Brome and past CEO of IFA (International Federation on Ageing)
