March editorial:
After reading the March editorial, I was encouraged at the February 29 meeting on the Strategic Plan, when the administration confirmed a 1% increase in population (~ 62 people). This goal aligns with reality and allows for harmonious development that preserves the natural environment, the heritage and the charm; all of which are vital to our local economy, particularly tourism and culture; and to the quality of life, we all value and seek to preserve.
The Strategic Plan focuses on these essential elements and must consider the limitations of existing infrastructure and services (e.g. road systems, waste-water systems, schools, day-care centers, and medical care). In particular, the Strategic Plan needs to consider the depletion of the aquifers which can impact water quantity and quality throughout TBL.
This was all very promising and positive. But surprisingly, to date since 2019, TBL has issued build- ing permits for 188 new housing units between 324 and 472 Knowlton Road; another 164 units on Julien Street; 8 units under construction on Elm Street; and there are ongoing discussions for an undetermined number of units south of Highland Street. This is in addition to the development of the Excelsoins properties on Knowlton Road – the existing 30 rental rooms at 399 and the 40 proposed units at 401. 430 new units within about 2 km of Knowlton.
The will of the citizens regarding our common future was clearly and consistently expressed throughout the entire process of developing the Strategic Plan. This will obviously need to continue during next month’s public consultation on the housing strategy. Progress is everyone’s business, and requires our constant, constructive commitment. We should all try to attend the May meeting.
