There’s nothing you can put your finger on, but it feels like one of those moments when there seems to be a lot of change in the air.
The retail and restaurant face of Knowlton is changing. There are new renovated facades to older buildings; the Lakeview has new owners; another hotel is in play and we can expect new people to run other restaurants.
The demographics of the Town have changed. It is a lot more French than it used to be, a natural progression, and at the same time it remains an island of tolerance. Then there is development. Six-plexes springing up like mushrooms along Knowlton Road; affordable rental properties are welcome, but when does looking like the outskirts of Cowansville become too much?
The area is home to fresh, young business owners, as we have profiled on these pages. The old order is changing. That applies to politics as well. There are municipal elections in 2025, and it is almost a certainty that we will see a new mayor as well as some new councillors.
Change is not always welcome. An example detailed elsewhere in this issue is the public market moving. When it left the Maple Street location there were complaints from merchants; now that it is moving back there are fresh complaints. One thing that never changes is many people don’t like change.
