On April 22, Aviron Knowlton Rowing (AKR) received final planning approval to build a rowing centre on a magnificent site between the Brome Lake Boat Club and Douglass Beach.
In collaboration with the Town of Brome Lake, AKR envisions the new centre as a vibrant hub for summer activities — particularly for children enjoying the beach.
Featuring a spacious dock designed for launching rowing shells, canoes, paddleboards, and other non-motorized watercraft, the centre will enhance lake access, making it easier and more inclusive than ever.
Beyond summer enjoyment, the 30’ x 100’ facility will:
- Provide shelter during sudden weather changes
- Extend training opportunities from early spring to late fall
- Offer secure winter storage for boats and equipment
“Everyone knows our lake is the jewel at the heart of our community,”
— says Fred Enns, the AKR volunteer leading the project.
“This centre creates the essential infrastructure to open the lake to everyone using non-motorized watercraft. It transforms Douglass Beach into the gateway to sustainable fun on the water.”
With approval in hand, AKR now embarks on the next phase: fundraising and construction.
If all goes well, construction could begin as early as this fall, with doors opening for the 2026 season.
