Last month’s Tempo editorial invited readers to share their top priority issues for the November municipal elections.
Several people took the time to write thoughtful emails and post their ideas on Tempo’s Facebook page.
Key Issues Identified So Far
Two major concerns have emerged as shared priorities:
- Protecting the Historic and Aesthetic Character of the Community
Residents expressed frustration over new construction that detracts from Knowlton’s charm, particularly citing displeasure with certain structures on Knowlton Road. - Speeding and Road Safety
Readers called for urgent improvements to road safety. In addition to the services of the Sûreté du Québec, which are seen as costly yet almost invisible, many suggested that the town should prioritize:- Traffic calming measures
- Better signage
- Lower speed limits
- Photo radar
Other Concerns and Ideas
- Environmental Protection for Brome Lake:
Suggestions include limiting boat motor size, banning gas-powered watercraft, and banning fireworks on the lake and waterways. - Cyclist and Pedestrian Safety:
One reader proposed a 10 km/h speed limit for cyclists on walking paths. - Community Greening:
Another reader suggested that the town offer free trees and compost to residents each spring. - Encouraging Commercial Activity:
Some called for efforts to attract new businesses, such as clothing shops, a French-language bookstore, and a sporting goods store. - Expanded Community Services:
One reader outlined a full electoral platform, calling for:- Expanded sports programs
- More community and cultural events
- Improved government transparency and efficiency
- Increased support for volunteer organizations
Acknowledging Past Achievements
As we look ahead to the elections, it is important to recognize the accomplishments of outgoing administrations.
Mayor Richard Burcombe and his team have made significant progress over the past 12 years:
- Improvements to drinking water
- New environmental protections
- Expansion of walking paths
- Upgrades to the sewage system
- Better citizen communications
He leaves the town with strong finances and an impressive record of achievements.
We Want to Hear From You!
There is still room for improvement across all the communities served by Tempo:
- Town of Brome Lake
- Brome
- West Bolton
- East Bolton
- St. Étienne de Bolton
