Located in the basement of Église St-Édouard at 366 Knowlton Road, Le Comptoir familial de Knowlton was founded in 1975 by members of the AFEAS (Association féminine d’éducation sociale), including Mrs. Irène Lavigne (mother of Claire), with a mission to help families in need.
What began as a simple clothing sale on tables outside the church after school eventually moved into the church basement, where the Comptoir still operates today.
Le Comptoir is an independent, volunteer-run, non-profit organization. After covering rent and minimal operating expenses, all profits are returned directly to the community—without any administration fees.
Over the years, Le Comptoir has regularly supported a wide range of local organizations and initiatives, including:
- The Food Bank and Fabrique St-Édouard
- First Responders, École St-Édouard, and Knowlton Academy
- Brome Lake Loisirs and Services communautaires (including Salamander Camp)
- The Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation
- The Fête nationale du Québec, Fondation Au Diapason, and Horizon pour Elle
- The Brome County Museum, Pettes Memorial Library, and CIDI Radio
- The Brome Lake Optimist Club, Lions Club, and Volunteer Firefighters Association
- La Boîte aux livres, SOS Dépannage, the Men’s Shed, and many more
- As well as individuals and families facing hardship due to specific events
50th Anniversary Celebration
To celebrate 50 years of community service, Le Comptoir is hosting a weekly draw throughout July and August. Customers who spend $5 or more will be entered into a draw to win $50 every Thursday (one ticket per adult per week).
