Knowlton sparkles with holiday joy

By John Griffin

The holiday season brings out the best in Brome Lake. Downtown Knowlton glows with traditional Christmas trappings. There are wreaths on doors, boughs in planters and festive decorations on everything that isn’t actively moving.

Music fills the air, bringing joy to the hearts of some and grudging tolerence in others. Shop windows and interiors reflect the Yuletide spirit and encourage shoppers to do just that and support local enterprise.

The town does its part. Director of Communications Ghyslain Forcier gives a rundown of its December activities, in collaboration with the general public.

Santa Claus Parade and Fairy Path

“First up is the Santa Claus parade on Dec. 6th. Then, from the 8th to 10th volunteers assemble the lanterns that will illuminate Coldbrook Park, and line the Fairy Path”, he says.

The path runs from beside the old Star Cafe along the brook to emerge on Maple. It is, even to bah-humbug eyes, a special experience.

The installation is set for Dec. 11.

Midnight Madness

Midnight Madness is next, Dec. 13, where everything in town stays open until that hour and all are encouraged to celebrate the season, imbibe prudently and shop till they drop. Town activities conclude with a bang Dec. 27, with fireworks in the park.

Knowlton Pub’s Annual Free Turkey Dinner

Other events include a traditional sit-down at the Knowlton Pub, called, fittingly, The Knowlton Pub’s Annual Free Turkey Dinner, on Dec. 13 (see article on Festive goodwill). In four seatings from noon to 7 pm, the bird and assorted trimmings will be served to many, many diners, in the cheerful ambience of Christmas.

Attendees are encouraged to give early and often, with proceeds to benefit the Knowlton Food Bank. One enthusiast will be putting her shoulder to the cause with 60 of her closest friends. They get a room of their own.
