Interview with the director of Theatre Lac Brome

By : Meredith Mackeen.

Pierre David Rodrigue, general and artistic director of Theatre Lac-Brome since March 2024, is committed to transforming the theatre into a multidisciplinary and multilingual venue at the heart of the cultural life here.

There are all types of shows from classical music to rock and jazz, from literary festivals to comedy shows, from theatre to film. And he is succeeding. Shows are regularly sold-out.

What’s New This Season

There are a few new things to watch for this season.

There will be increased numbers of free pre-concert shows linked with a performance of similar instruments but from another genre of music. Now tap dancing has been added.

Indigenous performers have been well received and Rodrigue looks forward to including more of them.

For film enthusiasts, international and Canadian films are available monthly on the large screen with good quality sound.

Art exhibits will be held in the foyer.

During intermission, baked goods may be sold as a fund raiser for community groups.

As well, independent groups such as the Knowlton Players, the Knowlton Film Festival and the Festival Littéraire Lac-Brome will continue to draw crowds.

The Future of English-Language Theatre

Inevitably the question arises, is there a future for English language theatre? Rodrigue is well aware of the differences between French and English preferences and has created a committee to increase both the quality and pertinence of performances.

He is confident,

“if we all work collectively and support the efforts, English theatre will flourish.”

Supporting the Theatre

Of course, operating a theatre is expensive and the Town of Brome Lake is a solid supporter. As well, Canada and Quebec government grants have contributed and the theatre itself has fund raising events. Presently the theatre is collecting money for a foundation which will help guarantee its future.

An Invitation to the Community

Rodrigue invites residents to share their ideas and love of theatre with him. He believes in diversity and wants the theatre to have something for everyone. He can be reached at Theatre Lac-Brome.
