October 5 election – Make your vote count

By : Jennifer Robinson.

Quebecers are going to the polls October 5 to elect a new provincial government. Make sure you are on the voters’ list by checking at http://www.electionsquebec.qc.ca. The site should tell you where you can vote, and provide information about advance polling. Make sure you enter your address in French (e.g. Bolton-Ouest, not West Bolton) as the government website does not seem to recognize our English town names, a consequence of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government’s latest language laws.

Tempo readers live in two ridings

Brome-Missisquoi, whose boundaries have been redrawn since the 2022 election. The riding includes Brome Lake and West Bolton, as well as Farnham, Bedford, Cowansville and Bromont.

Orford, which covers St-Etienne-de-Bolton and East Bolton, as well as Magog, Eastman and Mansonville.

Brome-Missisquoi

Aiming to recapture the once Liberal stronghold, Fred Beauchemin is running for the Quebec Liberal Party. Beauchemin is a long-time resident of Brome Lake and is currently the MNA for the Montreal riding of Marguerite-Bourgeoys.

Patrick Melchior, mayor of Farnham since 2021 and former head of the Brome-Missisquoi MRC, is running for the pro-Quebec-independence Parti Québécois.

Manuela Goya, a St-Armand resident and Tourisme-Montreal vice-president, is running for the CAQ.

David Alarie, an electro-mechanic, is running for the Conservative Party of Quebec.

Michelle Corcas, a Sherbrooke resident, is running for Québec Solidaire, and Michelle Julien is the candidate for the Canadian Party of Quebec.

Orford

Liberal Leader Charles Milliard is running in Orford, a riding that used to be a party fortress. Milliard is a resident of North Hatley, which is in the riding. Like Brome-Missisquoi, the riding was won by the CAQ in 2018 and 2022.

The CAQ candidate is Montreal human rights lawyer Allison Turner.

The PQ’s candidate is Jocelyn Caron, one of the people who worked on the PQ’s latest blueprint on independence.

The Conservative candidate is Benoît Robitaille.

The QS candidate is Eve-Lyne Clusiault.
