Transferring your farm?

Transferring a farm business is about much more than selling assets or changing a name on legal documents. It means passing on a history, knowledge, responsibilities, and a legacy built over many years.

A farm transfer involves three complementary dimensions: the transfer of knowledge, decision-making power, and ownership. It is also an important life transition: the next generation must gradually step into its role, while current owners reflect on their future role and life after the business.

Not Just a Transaction

Because every farm, family, and succession project is different, it is important to start early and surround yourself with the right people. Human and organizational considerations are just as important as economic, financial, tax, and legal matters.

In the Eastern Townships, the Conseil de l’industrie bioalimentaire de l’Estrie (CIBLE) offers farm transfer and human relations support services to help producers clarify their goals, structure the process, facilitate discussions, and coordinate the professionals involved.

Free Information Session

To help Brome-Missisquoi producers learn more, CIBLE and the MRC of Brome-Missisquoi are organizing a conference and networking event dedicated to farm business transfer, presented entirely in English.

The event will address the first steps in planning a transfer, how to assess the value and transferability of a farm, planning for life after the business, and services that connect owners with potential successors. Specialists and agricultural organizations will also be available to meet participants.

October 28, 2026, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Brome County Agricultural Society. The event is free, but registration is required. Visit cibleestrie.ca/transfert-agricole to register.
