Press Release

The Quebec PGI committee is once again organizing the annual PGI event with funds going to the Yamaska Literacy Council. The Peter Gzowski Invitational or PGI was started in 1986 by the late CBC broadcaster Peter Gzowski to raise funds for adult literacy.

Statistics show that 49% of Quebec adults (2.5 million people) have low literacy skills; 800,000 of these people have serious difficulty with the printed word. Low literacy can be a barrier to: finding work or re-training for work; voting in an election; navigating the justice system; finding and understanding health information or follow- ing a doctor’s instructions; understanding a phone bill, or studying for a driver’s license.

This year The Quebec PGI will sponsor a benefit concert and Silent Auction on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Auberge Lakeview in Knowlton. The program for the evening features Russell DeCarle (formerly from the well-known group – Prairie Oyster) and one of Canada’s most accomplished guitarists – Steve Briggs.) A student and a volunteer from the Yamaska Literacy Council will be recognized for their achievements. Our poet Laureate for the event is Julia Rohan.

Tickets are $30 per person. Please note there are no reserved seats. For information and ticket reservation, contact: Ilze Epners (450) 243-0720, or the Yamaska Literacy Council at (450) 263-7503, info@yamaskaliteracy.ca
