Alan J. Ross – 1942-2021

Born and raised in Ottawa, Alan studied philosophy at the PhD level at Western University before attending Cambridge University in England. Back in Canada he taught in Ottawa and then in Montreal at MIND Academy, an alternative school. As a teacher he was also involved in union issues and working conditions. At retirement, he moved to West Brome where he became a volunteer with the Yamaska Literacy council. He tutored and mentored many adult students notably at the Cowansville penitentiary.

“Knowlton was a special place in Alan’s heart’’ says Francine Bastien, his companion of 40 years.

“We met in Ottawa, where I worked at the time, but as he was living in Montréal, the welcoming house of our friends Naomie and Bernie Kahane on Tibbit’s Hill (where the picture was taken) was at the centre of our courtship. Our honeymoon took place in Knowlton. To return here at retirement time was a homecoming.’’

Plagued by a degenerative disease, Alan’s final years were difficult and painful. He leaves to mourn him, his wife Francine Bastien – a long time Tempo volunteer, his sons Simon (Sophia Andreski) and Michael (Rachel Romano) as well as two grandchildren Sophia and Alexander.

The family is especially grateful for the exceptional support provided by the staff at Foyer Sutton as well as at Residence Excelsoins in Knowlton.

Donations to your local library or the Salvation Army, a cause that Alan supported, would be welcome. As per his wishes, there will be no funeral service, however a tree will be planted honouring his memory in West Brome a place where he was particularly happy.
