The health of the lake

Conservation Lac Brome

More than forty people attended Conservation Lac Brome’s Annual General Meeting on Saturday, May 4 to get news about the organization and the state of health of the lake. This year, CLB had chosen to place emphasis on the revegetation of shorelines during the event.

Once the scientific projects were presented and the health of the lake was examined from all angles by the President, Jean-Pierre Pilon, Vice-President Christian Roy and Françoise Stanton, member of the board of directors, testified about the work of the new Blue Patrol among residents and users of Brome Lake, as well as efforts made in communications, reminding that in 2023, the image of the organization was rejuvenated: a new name, Conservation Lac Brome and new logo. This year, a brand-new slogan will follow: “I take care of my lake!” For his part, administrator Don Joyce, looked back on the 2023 Brome Lake clean-up operation, which allowed us to remove 500 kg of waste from the lake with the help of invited divers from the organization Faisons notre part. We look forward to repeating the operation for a third consecutive year in June 2024.

Priorities to maintain

• Monitoring vegetated shorelines, the “safety belt of the lake”, say the experts.

• Decrease in phosphorus inputs, which are responsible for the proliferation of aquatic plants, algae, and cyanobacteria, and contribute to the accelerated aging of the lake.

“At the moment, we must avoid “mixing” the sediments at the bottom and continue to raise awareness among the population who is partly responsible for the addition of the targeted nutrients,” reaffirmed the president, specifying that lakes are deteriorating more quickly since human interventions have increased.

• Representations to the Town and collaboration on its environmental projects.

Riparian strips: discussions with two specialists

Sonia Daoust, general director of OBV Yamaska, and Anaïs Renaud, new environmental advisor at Town of Brome Lake, both provided extensive information on adequate revegetation of shorelines to filter unwanted materials that are transported towards the lake or its tributaries. In Brome Lake, unfortunately, a significant number of residents do not yet respect municipal regulations on this subject.

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Yvan St-Onge volunteered to join CLB’s board of directors.

Reports, presentations, suggestions, questions, clarifications… “We learned a lot!” exclaimed several participants on their way out, visibly determined to take care of “their” lake.
