Summer – A Time to Escape the World’s Woes

Summer – A Time to Escape the World’s Woes

A cool and rainy spring is finally behind us, and now we are bathed in the warmth and light of summer. Yet even as the days grow long and bright, we continue to face a barrage of troubling news from near and far.

From the growing threats posed by an autocratic White House and the military suppression of protests in California, to the heartbreaking devastation in Gaza, the continued war in Ukraine, and renewed tensions between India and Pakistan—there is no shortage of global conflict and uncertainty. Closer to home, economic stress brought on by real or threatened tariffs, persistent inflation, and a sluggish economy only add to the strain.

It’s a full plate of worry.

But it’s summer—and surely, there is no better time to step away from the noise and take a much-needed breath. Many of us go on holiday or, at the very least, turn down the volume on divisive politics. It’s healthy—mentally and physically—to disconnect, even briefly, from the constant onslaught.

This is the time to look away from our screens and immerse ourselves in the beauty and richness of our region: the rolling hills, the forests, the lake, and the sense of community.

If you’re able, take long walks or more adventurous hikes on the Sutton trail network, or climb Mount Echo, Owl’s Head, or Mount Foster. Head out to the tennis or pickleball courts. Paddle a canoe or kayak on Brome Lake or along our rivers.

Explore the Tour des Arts, or a similar fine-arts tour in St. Étienne. Enjoy the Knowlton Film Festival. Take in music or theatre at Theatre Lac-Brome. Stroll through the farmers’ markets—Knowlton’s is in full swing on Saturdays on Maple Street, and Bolton-Est’s in Parc Terrio. Discover Bolton-Est’s eco-attractions, farm-to-table suppers, and its upcoming Folk & Blues Festival. Visit the Lac-Brome Museum and reconnect with our region’s history. And of course, cap off the season with a visit to the Brome Fair.

Some of these activities are described in this issue of Tempo, and others were highlighted in last month’s edition.

Sink your hands into the rich Townships soil and tend your garden. Spend quality time with loved ones. Start that long-postponed home improvement project. Or just curl up with a good book on the verandah and let a novel carry you far from today’s troubles.

Take care of yourself. Take time to breathe. Have a wonderful summer.
