The election of a new municipal council in Brome Lake marks an ideal moment to review our collective priorities and strengthen our commitment to the environment. Brome Lake, a natural jewel of our region, is an economic driver, a place for recreation, an ecological habitat, and the heart of our community. Yet, this richness remains fragile and vulnerable.

Conservation Lac Brome invites the newly elected administration to make protecting the lake a core priority, integrated into all decisions related to land use planning, regulation, and development.

Two Key Areas of Action

1. Environmentally Responsible Boating

Motorized boating, particularly wakesurfing, exerts direct pressure on the shoreline and lakebed by causing sediment resuspension. Shoreline erosion and disturbance of aquatic habitats are also worsened by the frequent passage of motorboats. To limit these impacts, wakesurfing should be permitted only in areas deeper than 6 meters and more than 300 meters from shore.

It is also necessary to extend low-speed zones to all areas shallower than 3 meters. Regular on-lake monitoring and continued efforts with the federal government to adapt boating regulations to the realities of Brome Lake are therefore crucial.

2. Sustainable Stormwater Management

Stormwater management is an equally fundamental issue. When rain falls on impermeable surfaces such as asphalt and rooftops, it does not infiltrate the soil. Instead, it runs off and carries pollutants, sediments, and nutrients to waterways and to the lake, fueling the proliferation of blue-green algae and the degradation of water quality. With climate change, episodes of intense rainfall are becoming more frequent, further exacerbating the situation.

The revised urban plan and the resulting municipal by-laws must include strict standards to limit soil impermeabilization, regulate the size and placement of buildings near the lake and streams, and promote green infrastructure solutions such as rain gardens, vegetated ditches, and riparian strips. It is equally essential to increase monitoring of construction sites to ensure they strictly adhere to environmental protection requirements and minimize direct impacts on natural areas.

A Shared Responsibility

Brome Lake deserves protection that matches its ecological and community value. The new Municipal Council has the responsibility to take strong, lasting, and unifying action.
