By Jean-Loup Beaulne-Morin
On November 17, the new town council held its first meeting since the November 2 election.
Mayor Lee Patterson and all the councillors thanked the voters for their participation and confidence. Together, they pledged to work diligently for the community. Mr. Patterson announced the council’s intention to broadcast its meetings online starting early in the year to allow greater access to the community.
Allocation of Portfolios
The meeting focused on the allocation of portfolios and the adoption of monthly reports:
- Pierre Laplante was appointed deputy mayor and will be responsible for, among other things, community services and fire safety.
- Claude Rajotte was appointed chair of the planning and environment advisory committees.
- Robert Laflamme was assigned the road safety and housing authority portfolios.
- Steven Beerwort will be responsible for recreation.
- Lisa Payne will be responsible for tourism and culture.
- The mayor will be responsible for economic development and communications.
Decisions and Approvals
The council approved the hiring of Nicolas Patterson – not a relative of the mayor – as the new cultural officer within the fast-expanding Recreation, Tourism, Culture and Community Life Department.
In addition, a grant of up to $10,000 was approved for the renovation of the façade of a commercial building located at 21-31 Lakeside Road.
Questions From the Public
During the question period:
- A resident asked why there was no clear term limit for members on the Urban Planning Advisory Committee.
- Another resident expressed concern about the impact of Quebec’s Bill 2 on local health services and urged the council to work toward maintaining their service and its quality.
- The seemingly high number of office staff hired by the town was also raised.
- Another resident called for improved snow removal on the pedestrian path.
- Concerns were raised regarding home delivery of the Tempo newspaper, which has been suspended for two months due to a labour dispute at Canada Post; the council was asked to pressure the federal agency to resume delivery of the newspaper, arguing that it disseminates important local news.
