Residents of the Bondville sector of the Town of Brome Lake were alerted to a significant sewer line break on November 20, resulting in an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 cubic metres of sewage flowing into Brome Lake. In a video statement posted on the town’s website, Mayor Lee Patterson assured the community that, despite the seriousness of the incident, the local drinking water supply was not affected.
Comprehensive environmental testing is scheduled for the spring to determine the full impact of the spill. Early assessments have revealed substantial water infiltration into the sewer system, an issue the town plans to tackle.
Investments to Prevent Future Spills
Patterson announced investments in new pumping stations, aimed at preventing future wastewater incidents.
The mayor also highlighted the town’s recent achievements in reducing wastewater spills, noting that Fondation Rivières had recently congratulated TBL for reducing its annual wastewater discharge count from 19 in 2019 to just two in 2024. The November one being the third for 2025.
