Literacy in all its many forms enriches lives and strengthen communities, yet studies show that one in five Quebecers is coping with significant literacy challenges. The good news is that help is available free of charge through the Yamaska Literacy Council, who have been providing vital services and support throughout our region since their founding forty-five years ago.
Literacy implies the ability to read, of course, but extends far beyond it. It includes the ability to understand and use written material effectively, and is also closely linked to numeracy and problem solving-skills.
Programs and Support
The organization provides a wide array of programs that respond to the needs of individuals, families and communities. YLC can provide free tutors, assistance in filling out forms, and guidance in how to foster love of reading from an early age, to highlight just a few. Literacy is a “use it or lose it skill”, emphasizes Wendy Seys, YLC’s Executive Director. The group helps adults of all ages to sharpen existing skills and develop new ones, including digital literacy, health literacy and financial literacy.

Volunteers benefit greatly from their involvement with YLC. For example, the GrandParent reading program that YLC offers to Knowlton Academy’s kindergarten classes was created several years ago to help remedy the social isolation that was impacting seniors during the pandemic and its’ aftermath. It’s a wonderful way for seniors and kids can share the fun of reading together.
Upcoming Event
The YLC’s will be hosting a special event at the Centre Lac Brome on April 11th f from 10 AM – 2 PM to highlight multiple literacies. It will include art and activities out in nature as well. Wendy Seys and the team invite you to stop by and “come and see what community literacy looks like!”
